JJ Tiziou

Founder & Lead Facilitator
JJ is an artist, community organizer and licensed massage therapist based in West Philly. His two biggest projects (the 85,000 sq ft How Philly Moves mural and Walk Around Philadelphia) both celebrate the entire city and intersect in physical space on the city’s margins. JJ has circumnavigated the entire city 16 times so far and is thrilled to be able to share this unique experience of the city with others.

How This all comes together

Walk Around Philadelphia is a growing, artist-led project rooted in collaboration, generosity, and shared stewardship.

While a small core team helps coordinate the work, the Walk truly exists because thousands of people — walkers, volunteers, partners, funders, and friends — continue to make it possible.

We’re grateful for everyone who has helped this project unfold.

Founding Collaborators

Walk Around Philadelphia first emerged from a creative residency in 2016, when JJ walked the city’s full perimeter together with Adrienne MackeyAnn de Forest, and Sam Wend. Their curiosity, trust, and willingness to experiment helped spark the practice that continues today.

Community advisory board

A rotating group of artists, civic leaders, educators, activists, neighbors, and previous walkers help guide the Walk’s direction through ongoing conversation and reflection. Members offer insight, accountability, and stewardship — supporting the project as it grows with intention.

We don’t publish a formal roster here because participation shifts over time — but we are deeply grateful for each advisor’s care and wisdom.

Trail Angels & Volunteers

Many people contribute time, care, surprise snacks, transportation support, and quiet acts of generosity — both during walk cycles and throughout the year. We couldn’t do this without them.

Partners

Walk Around Philadelphia has been strengthened through relationships with schools, community groups, parks and waterways organizations, arts institutions, and local nonprofits. These partnerships help broaden access, deepen learning, and connect the Walk to ongoing civic work.

Supporters & Funders

This project has been sustained through a combination of individual contributions, optional sliding-scale registration fees, and grants from philanthropic partners. We are grateful to everyone who has supported access through stipends and financial gifts.

… and our walkers

Most of all, we are grateful for every single person who has accepted our invitation to explore the edges. Whether walking with one of our groups or setting out to undertake the walk on their own, every step shapes what Walk Around Philadelphia continues to become.
