Anybody have any tips for cold weather walks?
Among my favorites (besides lots of layers) are:
- Thin liner gloves underneath your gloves. These could be silk, wool, or even just nitrile / latex hospital or kitchen gloves.
- Windproof layers. A giant puffy coat can be nice, but you might start overheating once you get moving, so it’s good if you have options to unzip it or combine it with multiple layers. A raincoat won’t keep you warm, and thick wool sweater is nice indoors but the wind will cut right through it – but the raincoat over top of the thick sweater makes a great combination. Similarly, a big thick knitted hat won’t do you much good in the wind, but you could even toss a plastic bag over top of it and it immediately becomes a much more powerful insulating layer. (admittedly not the most stylish look but… we believe in function over fashion ’round here.)
- Strap-on ice cleats to add stability on icy surfaces. (Yak Trax or otherwise)
- Handwarmer & toe-warmer packets. I don’t use these often myself, but great to have on hand if a fellow walker’s starting to get frozen fingers or toes!
- A thermos with hot cocoa (or other warm beverage, hot soup, etc).
I’d be curious to hear if there’s any other things that folks have found helpful.
